All the essentials

Practice that adapts to you

A placement test skips what you already know. Then it learns your pace and brings back the words you need to practice.

Every official HSK 3.0 word

All 10,931 words and 2,966 characters, level by level. Walk into the exam prepared.

Tones, asked explicitly

Every answer asks for the tone. The tone trainer tunes your ear.

Simple by design

Open, practice, see your progress. Nothing competes for your attention.

How it works

One Chinese word at a time: pinyin, tones, characters.

  1. Read the meaning

GoMando shows you the translation of a word, with no pinyin or characters to lean on.

  2. Type the pinyin

You type how the word is pronounced, so you can't just recognize the answer and move on.

  3. Choose the tones

You pick the tone for every syllable on a radial tone selector. A right sound with a wrong tone is a different word in Mandarin.

  4. Choose the characters

You pick the Chinese characters (hanzi) that write the word. Pinyin and characters are graded separately, so you see which one you know.

  5. Review what you miss

Words you get wrong come back sooner, words you know come back later. Like spaced repetition, without building flashcards.

Every HSK 3.0 level

From your first words to the advanced exam.

The HSK (Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi) is the official Chinese proficiency test. Its new HSK 3.0 syllabus has nine levels: HSK 1 to HSK 6, plus HSK 7–9 as one advanced band. GoMando contains every word on the official list, 10,931 words written with 2,966 different characters.

Start with HSK 1 if you are a complete beginner, or take the placement test to skip what you already know. The catalogue shows your progress for each HSK level, so you can see how close you are to the vocabulary an exam expects, whether you are preparing for the HSK, moving to China, or learning Mandarin as a hobby.

Questions

What is GoMando?

GoMando is an app for learning Mandarin Chinese vocabulary. You see a word's definition, type its pinyin, choose its tones and pick its Chinese characters, and the app schedules what you practice next from what you got right and wrong.

Does GoMando cover the new HSK 3.0?

Yes. The catalogue holds all 10,931 words of the official HSK 3.0 syllabus, from HSK 1 to HSK 7–9, written with 2,966 different characters.

Is GoMando free?

GoMando is free to download and start. An in-app purchase, Unlock All Words, unlocks the full catalogue.

How is GoMando different from Anki or flashcards?

You don't build or import decks, and you don't grade yourself. You type the answer, so the app knows whether you actually recalled the pinyin, the tone and the characters, and it brings back the words you keep missing.

What does GoMando teach?

GoMando teaches Chinese vocabulary: the meaning of each word, its pinyin, the Mandarin tones and the Chinese characters. Every answer asks for the tone explicitly, and a separate tone trainer plays syllables for you to identify by ear.

I already know some Chinese. Do I have to start at HSK 1?

No. A placement test finds the words you already know, so you begin on the ones you haven't mastered yet.

Does GoMando need an account?

No. There is no sign-up, and your progress stays on your device.
